Polecats and Tags

The Barber Pole Cat Program was created many years ago and features popular Barbershop songs arranged and voiced so ALL singers can learn and participate. For decades these have been the standard arrangements where singers can meet at conventions and sing together having never met before.

There are several good websites where you can hear and learn polecats. Try Lyles learning lounge for starters.

Tags - A Barbershop Tag is the ending of a barbershop song, usually the last four to eight bars, and often considered the best chords in the song. Barbershoppers worldwide memorize the tags, then teach them to each others to sing at barbershop events. Usually in the hallway on the eighth floor of some hotel, often until the early hous of the morning. Tags are characterized by a heightening of the dramatic tension of the song, frequently including a hanger, or posted note. In addition, good tags can be sung as short, stand-alone works. Tags may be soft and tender but are typically characterized by loud, "paint peeling," ringing chords. According to the competition rules of the Barbershop Harmony Society, every song entered for a competition must have a tag.
